Owned and run by Stella Viola di Campalto, of Roman and Piedmontese origin, located close to the south-eastern village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Stella created San Giuseppe on her own in 1992. The unfertilised, unaided but carefully tended vines which thrive on a rich diversity of soils: mostly rocky, quartz, alberese, volcanic, iron, alluvial, and limoso (silt). Today Stella di Campalto is one of Brunello di Montalcino’s most sought-after producers, and certainly one of its most respected artisans. She has achieved this through her natural, and non-interventionist approach. The parcels of vines are harvested separately in order to capture the maximum fruit quality and soil expression, handled by gravity and vinified in 100% oak, in large wooden troncoconici/vats.

Tasting Notes

Perfumed and pretty at first, yet restrained, while gaining in depth over time, as mineral-tinged cherry, hints of incense and licorice come forward. It’s silky, nuanced and undeniably gracious in nature. Zesty acids and the slightest tug of round tannins support a pure display of ripe red berries. While lightly structured, the 2016 is still juicy and finessed, tapering off with youthful tension under an air of pretty violet florals. This vintage has the word “Gioia'' (Italian for “joy”) elegantly embossed on the label, a sensation that this bottle will deliver over the next five to seven years.

Food Pairing

Red meat, duck, cheese.
