This vintage carries on Niepoort's heritage of producing balanced Ports that are subtle and delicate while yet having a lot of focus. Days that were extremely hot and humid occurred during the 2005 harvest. Although there was a lot of fruit produced, the tannins and color were concentrated in the little berries. Grapes that were overripe and dried out were removed to ensure the wine's delicacy. The needed freshness was added to the final blend with flavors of coffee and blackberries from Vinha da Pisca, a very old vineyard.
Tasting Notes
The flowery and fruity characteristics are accentuated by the fine, refined, mineral but not balsamic flavor. Despite being a tannic wine, the flavor remains pleasant. With a lengthy, peppery aftertaste, it is rich without being overwhelming. Excellent finesse despite being powerful.
Food Pairing
Perfect with foods that feature beef, the Portuguese cheese "Queijo da Serra," Stilton or other blue cheeses, and sponge cake desserts.
