Gramona Ill Lustros Burt Nature Corpinnat 2013
Suggested Food Pairings:
Gramona’s history is long and storied, and the property has been a quality reference point in the zone for decades. As far back as 1816 a member of the family has been making wine in Penedes. Today, Gramona is one of the few remaining family-owned estates in the region, with many having been bought by large companies. Gramona is located in the Penedes region of Spain just 45 minutes from Barcelona along Spain's Mediterranean coast. The Climate in Penedes is mild and warm, benefiting mostly from a Mediterranean influence. However, as the differences in elevation are quite dramatic (with some vines at over 700 meters), there are many microclimates in the zone.
The splendid sparkling wine is a Corpinnat sparkling wine made from a blend composed mainly of Xarel·lo, and complemented with Macabeo. The Xarel·lo grapes are grown in a 4-hectare plot with clayey soils, and the Macabeo in a 1 hectare plot with sandy soils. Both are organically farmed, and the winery is increasingly applying biodynamic techniques to enhance the vitality of the grapevines.
Tasting Notes
Straw hue with golden highlights. On the nose, intense with clear notes of maturity under a constant veil of freshness. Baked apple and sweet pears. Ripe citrus, grapefruit peel. Faded flowers and a herbal backdrop reminiscent of fennel and rosemary. The ageing notes run through a gamut of aromas which includes hazelnuts, pastries, toast, brioche and toffee. The sparkling becomes more and more expressive as it opens up in the glass. On the palate, powerful on entry with great structure. The carbon dioxide is fine and creamy. Loads of candied fruit balanced by the notes from ageing. The balsamic aromas come through again. Lively, refreshing finish on the palate. The aftertaste is never-ending.
Food Pairing
This is very much a sparkling wine for enjoying with good food. With its balance of structure, creaminess and freshness, it works well with all food types and recipes. Appetizers, foie gras, terrines and cold meats. Seafood and fish. Poultry and even rice dishes, stews and hotpots. Give the Gramona III Lustros Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2013 some time to breath before you drink it.
