Château Calon Ségur 2014
Suggested Food Pairings:
The community of Saint-Estèphe has its roots in the Gallo-Roman origins of this chateau. Chateau Calon-Ségur was the first wine estate in the commune and is classified as a 3éme Cru Classé (Third Growth).
"Calon", meaning a little river skiff used in the Middle Ages to ferry timber across, gave the name to this district which was at one point known as Calones or Saint-Estèphe-de-Calon. By marriage, the estate came to be also owned by Château Latour. Despite his ownership of these two First Growths, the Marquis said that "I make wine at Lafitte and Latour but my heart is at Calon Segur." The wine's label today includes a drawing of a heart around the Château's name.
Tasting Notes
The 2014 Calon Ségur has to be considered an undeniable success in the vintage, offering the elegance, balance, and charm that’s the hallmark of this late growing season. Still relatively tight and reserved, with beautiful notes of black currants, smoked earth, graphite, and tobacco leaf, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful purity, and a layered, elegant style that opens up with time in the glass. It has more density than the 2015 and will keep for two decades or more.
