Unveiling the Mystery of Mulled Wine

Mulled wine, also known as spiced wine, is a beloved beverage with roots that trace back centuries. Its origin can be linked to the European winter markets and holiday celebrations where the enticing blend of warm red wine and aromatic spices became a symbol of togetherness and joy.

The Recipe for Mulled Wine

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of Ramon Bilbao Crianza (750ml)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1/4 cup Saint Rémy VSOP brandy (optional)
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 vanilla bean (split) or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of nutmeg (freshly grated, if possible)

Instructions:
  1. Pour the red wine into a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and vanilla bean
  3. Stir in the honey or sugar to sweeten the mix.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer (avoid boiling) and let it gently cook for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  5. If desired, add the brandy for an extra kick.
  6. Before serving, sprinkle a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg over the top.
